4 Beauty Treatments You Can Easily Do On a Plane

Make The Most Of Your Time Spent In The Air and Update Your Beauty Routine

Sky-high travel does not have the same distinction as it did in the past. Gone are the days of all-inclusive amenities, when five-star meals, roomy seats, and friendly staff were the requisites (unless, of course, you spend the big bucks on a first class ticket). This has led to a devolution of the dress code: sweatpants and hoodies have replaced elegant suits and dresses. So since looking your best is no longer the status quo, make the most of your time spent in the air and update your beauty routine. Yes, you heard us correctly. Even with the cramped space and scarcity of bathrooms, many brands have an assortment of easy, nonintrusive, and travel-size products that will have you looking and feeling refreshed post-flight. Think of it as your personal beauty salon in the sky.

Hair

Save those Veronica Lake-esque waves and chic up-dos for after you land. Traveling on a plane, when the back of your head is virtually glued to the seat, is definitely not conducive to having great hair. This is why it is best to use the time you have to prep. After you tuck away your carry-on and before the "fasten seatbelt" sign turns on, take a thumb-size portion of Oribe’s Supershine Moisturizing Cream and gently massage it through your (preferably damp) tresses. By the time you land (hopefully on schedule), you’ll have Hollywood hair.

Skin

Cabin pressure is not the best environment to get glowing skin. In fact, you’re more likely to have your face dry out quicker. "Airplane air is 50% fresh and 50% recirculated air, and has a humidity of around 12% to 15%," says Chang, co-founder of Glow Recipe. “This humidity level is drier than many deserts and will sap essential moisture from your skin, leaving it looking dry and rough.” To remedy this, Glow Recipe’s other co-founder, Sarah Lee, recommends applying the Organic Flowers + Aloe Vera Fermented Hydrogel Sheet Mask. While the refreshment cart comes around, make sure to ask for a small glass of water and dab your face with a damp napkin. Next, tear off the seal and gently place the gel over your face. Now for the best part: put your head back and chill for 10 to 15 minutes. While you’re getting some much-needed R&R, so will your skin.

Teeth

“One major health concern that can arise while flying is the risk of dehydration due to the low humidity in the aircraft cabin,” says Dr. Mitali Hariawala, DMD, MS, the dental community manager at Quip, a brand of electric toothbrushes. “Dehydration can lead to a dry mouth, which increases the risk for dental decay and bad breath. Therefore, it is extremely important to maintain good oral hygiene, even while traveling, which includes staying hydrated, brushing, and flossing to promote oral health.”

This is why it is important to brush your teeth on flights—something that Quip kept in mind with the design of its toothbrushes with replaceable heads. Sleek, compact, and with a wall mount that doubles as a travel cap, Quip’s line allows for a hassle-free brush and rinse in those cramped washrooms.

Eyes/Lips

The last hour before the plane lands is usually eye-opening—literally! You are most likely waking up from your brief (perhaps turbulent-heavy) slumber and are making sure that all your papers (and sometimes sanity) are in order. The last thing you’re thinking about is your appearance, especially your lips and eyes—two of your most visible features. Need the fail-safe solution with long-term effects? Enter La Prairie’s Anti-Aging Eye and Lip Perfection a Porter. “The Anti-Aging Eye and Lip Perfection a Porter is absolutely perfect for travel as it keeps my lips and eyes super hydrated throughout the flight,” says Dr. Marnie B. Nussbaum, MD. “It fits easily into my carry-on and truly kills two birds with one stone.” -B.S.
