About Town | Rx Art

We join the celebration of RxArt's 16th anniversary.

We are a predominantly visual culture—if you don’t believe this, ask yourself what your favorite app is (did you say “Instagram”? Us, too). The fascination we have with Instagram and the attention it garners is especially key to the modern artist—many editors in the industry take to Instagram to find their newest contributors. This attention influx is giving new life to a field once patronized only by those akin to royalty, and the recipients of this attention are keen to give back. Our case in point: RxArt (helmed by the ever stylish Diane Brown)—an outstanding organization that unites artists with hospitals to create large installation pieces aimed at lifting the spirits of ill children receiving various types of treatments.

This year, the organization celebrated its 16th birthday at the Stephen Weiss gallery in NYC by awarding CEO of PillPack TJ Parker the Innovation Award. The company donates $100 to RxArt for every person who signs up for the service via customized referral links shared via social media. Artist Rob Pruitt, who serves on RxArt’s board and has been collaborating with the foundation since 2008, was presented with the Inspiration Award by Jenna Lyons. It’s his Panda-based pieces that gave life to the décor for the night—bartenders wore panda costumes, servers wore black and white, and giant foil panda balloons peppered gallery. Attendees perused the silent action, stealthily writing in bids to attain their dream piece while enjoying Casa Dragones cocktails. With drinks flowing, the live auction began and flying hands grossed a cool 100k+ for Rob Pruitt’s piece Love Is Keeping Warm Together. All proceeds raised by the silent and live auction were donated back to RxArt—now there’s a reason to celebrate. —LK
