WELCOME TO THE CLUB

Get Inside The Story: Club Monaco's star-studded SS '17 presentation.

It’s only fitting that Club Monaco’s SS ’17 presentation paid homage to the film Latcho Drom, an obscure French documentary that follows a family of travelers as they take in the vibrant cultures of Romania and India along the way. The film mirrors the patterns of the fashion set—we travel from store to store, brand to brand, adopting distilled versions of cultural dress and traditions that designers incoporate from season to season.

Caroline Belhumeur, the CD of women’s design, drafted floral patterns whose origins could be traced to Romanian shawls. “We’ve stayed true to our urban roots, mixing [the pattern] with crisp fabrics and sculptural shapes.” Indeed, the florals were a stand out here. Off-the-shoulder silhouettes returned in several looks. Tiers and ruffles met in relaxed ensembles that read neither bohemian nor victorian—a fine line to walk. The collection, overall, felt easy. Practical flats with scalloped detailing and lace-up block heels accompanied the looks, fit for those always roaming from place to place or perhaps from block to block.

The men’s collection offered an easily translatable education in mixing prints for those looking to make sense of the varying florals. The color palettes, darker than expected for spring, helped the mens collection to sync with the amazing floral displays that grew from the ceilings of the presentation spaces courtesy of florist Putnam & Putnam.

The clothing the models wore were artfully arranged in separate vignettes—you could try on anything that fit your fancy. Editors like Grace Coddington mingled with actors like Jemima Kirke, Drew Barrymore, Katie Holmes, and Jeremy Piven (to name a few) while indulging in a decadent spread by Sqirl and sipping on rhubarb prosecco—this is what it was like to be “in the Club”. —LK
