About Town | Breakfast At Tiffany

The Blue Box Café Opens On The Flagship’s New Home + Accessories Floor

Delicious Jewelry + Gifts. A selection of the new Color Block collection includes a salt and pepper set; dessert plate; teapot; espresso cups; sugar bowl + more. The new range of teas and candles—even a deck of cards—make memorable hostess gifts. Wrap watches come in a variety of colored faces and contrasting bands from the East West collection. A selection of rings and bracelets from the Tiffany T collection in 18K rose, white and gold with and without diamonds.

When we think of classic New York City, right up there next to yellow cabs, a sprawling skyline, hurried walkers, and Central Park, are the turquoise blue boxes and decadent window displays at Tiffany & Co.'s Fifth Avenue flagship store. The premiere American jewelry establishment was founded in New York in 1837, and has maintained its rich flair for glamour and luxury for over 180 years. Throughout its history, countless films have tried to capture the true essence of the brand and what it means to wear Tiffany, but the release of Breakfast At Tiffany (1961) starring Audrey Hepburn was a turning point, catapulting the brand into America’s mainstream.

It seems only fitting, then, that the flagship open its first ever retail dining experience. We were invited for breakfast and wouldn't dare pass up the chance to spend the morning sipping tea at The Blue Box, a near impossible reservation to nab. After sliding through the revolving doors at 727 Fifth Avenue, a tuxedo-sharp gentleman guided us to another concierge awaiting us at the elevator bank, past cases of shimmering diamonds and exquisite gems, to take us up to breakfast at Tiffany.

Tiffany Tea No. 727 Black Tea and Floral Blend; Everyday Objects Sterling Silver Bird's Nest with Tiffany Blue Porcelain Eggs;  Tiffany Metro Watch in 18k Rose Gold with Diamonds; Medium Wire Bracelet in 18k Rose, White and Gold With and Without Diamonds; Color Block Espresso Cup and Saucer; Tiffany Hardwear Link Necklace in 18k Gold.

We arrived on the newly renovated Home + Accessories fourth floor, which was redesigned in November in conjunction with the opening of the café "to reflect a modern luxury experience," according to Reed Krakoff, chief artistic director of the company since last January. "The space is experimental and experiential--a window into the new Tiffany," Krakoff says. Sterling silver bookends and teapots, and blue Tiffany reusable straws and trinkets are displayed on herringbone marble and amazonite stone tabletops to emphasize the brand's focus on selling everyday luxury.  The floor also houses a baby boutique, a Tiffany fragrance lab, a curation of vintage books by Assouline, and a staircase with 15-foot-high light chains and black-and-white modern designs created by Parisian designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec.

Tiffany T Square Bracelet in 18k Gold + Rose Gold With and Without Pavé Diamonds; Tiffany Tea No. 727 Black Tea and Floral Blend; Color Block Sugar Bowl; Tiffany Hardwear Ball Ring in 18k White Gold with Diamonds; East West Watch; Tiffany T Wire Bracelets in 18k White, Rose and Gold.

This new collection is inspired by the Tiffany archives and features household items like a first aid kit, paper cups, ice bucket, and ruler, all in sterling silver and many of them monogrammable. “I think what makes the collection unique is that it incorporates the best quality, craftsmanship and design with a level of functionality that allows you to use these things every day,” says Reed. Various household items get the Tiffany blue upgrade, like a piggy bank and cashmere blanket; while dishes, plates, tea cups and more are color-blocked in white and the iconic blue.

Sitting atop the grand staircase and overlooking Central Park, we finally reached The Blue Box Café. Set atop metal tables are full place settings featuring the color-blocked dishware collection and a pair of salt and pepper shakers that are a Story + Rain favorite. The menu is derived from regionally sourced ingredients and offers a "Breakfast At Tiffany" lunch that includes a signature club sandwich named after the brand's founder and traditional "Tiffany Tea" service including, finger sandwiches and petits fours, with a selection of fine teas by Bellocq that can be purchased in store.

We ordered a tasting menu of breakfast: avocado toast with radish, nasturtium, sorrel, sunflower and sprouts; eggs topped with shaved truffles, kunik cheese and bacon; smoked salmon and bagel stack with cream cheese, beefsteak tomato, red onion, and capers. We sipped on teas from Bellocq and hot, crisp coffee.

Surrounded by Tiffany blue, whether it be the marble walls, plush fabric chairs or the painted ceiling, it’s as if we truly are dining inside the walls of a jewel box. And it is just what we had expected — tastefully whimsical and deliciously designed.
