AROUND THE GLOBES

The first in a series of stories we’ll do all season long covering the red carpet's biggest trends.

Not every awards show boasts an evening as sartorially successful as this year’s Golden Globes did. Sure, a few head-scratching looks made their way in (they always do), but the majority of actresses showed up on the red carpet in some truly stellar trends. From plunging necklines, show-stopping embellishments, a ubiquitous nude lip, muted hues that were anything but dull, brilliant yellows, and a hefty dose of shimmer and shine, we couldn’t take our eyes off the steady stream of chic actresses in downright knockout ensembles. Inspired by this fleet of lovelies, we decided to fete the night’s winning looks by highlighting the most illustrious trends of the night. Here’s a closer look…

A barely there, pinkish nude lip has a soft, youthful, healthy-looking effect, and this year it was spotted all over the red carpet on celebs like Naomie Harris, Kristen Bell, Emily Ratajkowski, and a slew more. Equally popular was the deep side part, both the slicked-back polished styles (see Jessica Biel) and the glammed-up wavy dos reminiscent of Old Hollywood seen on stunners like Brie Larson.

One of the most standout hues of the evening was yellow in audacious shades. We saw its alluring side in Reese Witherspoon’s strapless form-fitting gown with a thigh-high slit; then we saw it elevated to the height of sophistication in Natalie Portman’s 60s-inspired gown with three-quarter length sleeves. Yellow’s metallic counterpart also ruled the carpet, most notably in the curve-hugging variety. Exhibit A (for amazing): Priyanka Chopra’s Ralph Lauren number.

Drew Barrymore in Monique Lhuillier, Gina Rodriguez in Naeem Khaan, Naomi Harris in Armani Prive, Emma Stone in Valentino, Nicole Kidman in Alexander McQueen

Silver won big on the red carpet this year, especially in the form of statement-making, floor-length gowns. From Nicole Kidman’s embellished, elegant McQueen dress to Emma Stone’s more playful, star-adorned one by Valentino, the future of Hollywood fashion looked decidedly bright.

The trick to glamming up an already glam look? One of these statement necklaces. While the night’s stars opted for canary diamonds (Reese Witherspoon) and ladylike pearls (Sienna Miller), what this trend ultimately proved is that a necklace doesn’t have to go to great lengths to make a huge impact. —AZ
